Moving day

Posted on

Said I wouldn’t be updating this blog any more, yet here I am.  It’s to say the first post on my new blog — absolutely nothing to do with nail polish or makeup — is published and I hope you can check out A Meal and a Movie if you’re so inclined.  Tell your friends.  Tell your family.  Tell your friends’ families.  I’m on another Facebook page as well.

The layout and buttons on AMaaM are almost the same as on The Silver Nail so I hope it will be comfortable to navigate.  Still working out a few settings and tags and other details.

Thank you all so much for all the great comments in the past few days.  See you on the other side!

Shhhhhhh! Time for WHISPERS — new collection from Zoya — preview

Zoya Whispers

Experience color serenity with this muted and tranquil palette of transitional nail neutrals.

  • Cala – ZP823: A soft nude with a kiss of warmth that will flatter most skin tones.
  • April – ZP824: A light, rosy toned neutral that is a modern take on blush.
  • Eastyn – ZP825: A subtle grayed grape that is more interesting than mauve and gives a modern alternative that is ever so wearable.
  • Misty – ZP827: An easy to wear taupe that is an updated version of gray with just a touch of green to make it daring.
  • Ireland – ZP826: A uniquely wearable green that is muted enough to make it subtle yet still interesting. This green is well balanced between blue & yellow so it’s flattering on all skin tones.
  • Lake – ZP828: A softened blue that gives the effect of serene water with just a hint of vibrancy to preserve its luminosity.

What a beautiful winter-into-spring collection.  The muted rose and the blue are sure putting me in mind of Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2016.  Lovin’ the lavender Eastyn too!

Coming from Sephora — all that Pantone jazz

Posted on

I was looking forward to seeing what Sephora was going to have as tie-ins to the Pantone Color(s) of the Year for 2016.  Last year I missed out on the Marsala (wine red) eye shadow palette they had and would’ve liked to have gotten it, but oh well, wasn’t going to pay hundreds for it on eBay.

As mentioned earlier this month, the Colors of the Year are Rose Quartz and Serenity, beautiful pastels.  I kind of wonder if they’re going to be that great for all skin tones, though, especially for darker-skinned people.

At any rate, here are some of the upcoming items from Sephora:

There’s a matte light blue lipstick (WHY?  Who wants to wear light blue lipstick and look like Halloween?  This must be some trend that, at 57, I’m not getting.  I understand that it can be “fun,” but…. blue lips???), a pink “layer” lipstick, an eye shadow palette, and a set of lip glosses that includes a blue and a yellow, because who doesn’t want blue or yellow lips.  #zombielips   #jaundice   #frostbite

The eye shadow palette, eh, don’t think so.  My first impression is that there are not nearly enough pinks and most of the colors would not flatter me at all.  It seems all over the color map.  I see Marsala from last year, Radiant Orchid from the year before, a weird lime green, a flat-out red, and other shades that make me say, “Probably not.”  For $39, I think I can find something more flattering.

What’s old is new — RETRO REVIVAL Collection from Essie

Posted on

Big news from Essie!  Per their Facebook page:  35 years. 6 iconic shades and one ‘Starry Starry Night’.  Introducing the Retro Revival collection celebrating 35 years of Essie.

Essie Retro set

Colors are:

  • Starry Starry Night
  • Life of the Party
  • Bikini with a Martini
  • Sequin Sash
  • Birthday Suit
  • Cabana Boy

and will be available in early January.  You can see more of the set at Essie.com and in this fab retro video on YouTube.

I didn’t even know about Essie decades ago, but I’ve heard that Starry Starry Night is so sought-after that people are willing to sell their firstborn to snag a bottle on eBay.  Now we won’t have to.

Have a great weekend!

Hello Kitty 2016 from OPI

Posted on

I presume the Hello Kitty multi-billion-dollar-generating Japanese character needs no introduction.  It’s been around since the ’70s, but unlike much 1970s culture, it’s not one of my favorite things.  Don’t dislike it, just not crazy about it.

At any rate, OPI is coming out with a 12-polish Hello Kitty themed set for early 2016.  Exact release date unknown but I’ve read early January.

Heavy on the pink, no surprise there.

Blogger The Nailasaurus has a preview and swatches of six of the shades HERE.  Another sneak peek from BeautyGeeks HERE.  And more swatches of the same six colors by Really Ree HERE.

Cute, but, not being a particular HK fan, nothing grabs me.  Colors are pretty yet nothing new.  If you’re a Hello Kitty lover or know someone who is, though, have fun!

NEWS FLASH!! Pantone Color of the Year for 2016 is…..

Posted on

…. drum roll, please……

TWO colors!  Yes, it’s twins!

Pantone colors of the year 2016

I am in color heaven.  Rose Quartz appears to be one of my favorite pinks, a peachy shade, and Serenity one of my favorite blues, slightly periwinkle.   *** swoons ***

Now, I am not a slave to fashion and I don’t live my life strictly according to Pantone.  But if there is going to be a tsunami of nail polishes, clothes, and other fun stuff in these colors, then I am so there.

Read all about the colors, the reasoning behind the decisions, and so forth via The Wall Street Journal.  (The WSJ, really?  Yes, really.  Fashion is big money in the business world.)

Spring? Spring.

Having a dearth of other news to post, and no new polish I want to dig out and swatch today, here’s some Spring 2016 news and pictures.  Yes, we just got our first snow of the late fall/early winter, but the fashion world lives and operates in the future.

The big twelve-polish set for next spring from OPI is called New Orleans, keeping with their country/city/region theme for such sets.  Cut the chatter and let’s see:

Color names:

  • Let Me Bayou a Drink
  • Humidi-Tea
  • Suzi Nails New Orleans
  • I Manicure for Beads
  • Spare Me a French Quarter?
  • She’s a Bad Muffuletta!
  • Got Myself into a Jam-balaya
  • Crawfishin’ for a Compliment
  • Take a Right on Bourbon
  • I’m Sooo Swamped!
  • Rich Girls & Po-Boys
  • Show Us Your Tips!

Typical groan-worthy and sometimes fun puns.  I’m only disappointed there’s no reference to beignets!

I think this looks like a great set, very spring-like.  Loving the blues, which, now that I think about it, also sounds very New Orleans.  There will be a mini set of four which I’m liking except for the grasshopper green, a dreadful shade for my skin tone.

I know, I know, I’m rushing the season.  Enjoy fall and winter first!  Colors, names, etc. are subject to change.  Release date unknown.
