Whispers Collection from Zoya — comparisons

Posted on

Disclosure:  The Whispers Collection and the comparison polishes were supplied by Zoya for review.

I hope my review yesterday of the new Whispers Collection, while brief, was helpful.

Whispers set

Left to right:  Cala, April, Eastyn, Misty, Ireland, and Lake

After thinking it over, I believe I should have used a third coat for several of the polishes for better results, particularly the two lightest colors, Cala and April.  Also, April has grown on me; it’s a very pretty pale rose, but I still think it would look better on someone with very light or very dark skin.

Well, let’s do some comps.  I’m reading that Whispers reminds many people of the Naturel Satins set from one year ago, and I think that too.  The finish is different; Naturel Satins was all semi-mattes and Whispers is all glossy cremes.  Also, I’ll only be comparing Zoyas.

I’m going to show old photos of the comparison polishes along with the new Whispers ones because I’ve done a major stash purge (to benefit local homeless teens) and no longer own most of these older shades.

First, Cala:

Whispers Cala

Ana from Naturel Satins:

Naturel Satins Ana

Taylor and Chantal from the original Naturel Collection:

Chantal and Taylor w Chantal bottle

Of these three comps, I think Chantal is the closest to Cala.  I liked Chantal’s formula better and thought it was much smoother.  Ana is paler, a tad pinker, and semi-matte, and Taylor is more tan.

April:

Whispers April

Brittany:

Naturel Satins Brittany

Rue:

Rue

Dot:

Awaken Dot

Brittany is very close except for its finish.  Rue is darker and more lavender.  Dot is darker (although still a very pale pink) and much peachier-toned.

Eastyn:

Whispers Eastyn

Leah:

Naturel Satins Leah

Very similar except for the finish.  Both were more gray than purple or lavender to me.

Misty:

Whispers Misty

Rowan:

Naturel Satins Rowan

Rowan was gray-taupe without Misty’s greenish tint.

Ireland:

Whispers Ireland

Sage:

Naturel Satins Sage

Tiana:

Delight Tiana

Not that close but I wanted to show them anyway.  Sage has a slight teal tone and Tiana is much brighter, kind of like lime sherbet.

Lake:

Whispers Lake

Tove:

Naturel Satins Tove

Blu, Lillian, and Kristen:

Delight comp blue b2

Tove is close although slightly more gray.  Blu is paler and chalkier, Lillian is more teal, and Kristen is only a hair darker.

Of all these comparisons, I found no true duplicates.  Nevertheless, some are very close.  Probably the most similar ones are Cala to Chantal, and Eastyn to Leah.  Remember, you can always put a satin top coat on a glossy polish or vice versa.

Did I forget any?  Ask away, and if I have pictures I’ll post them.

The Whispers Collection is available for pre-order at ZOYA.COM , and there is a sale too.  Check my review yesterday for details.

They’re here!  Just got my media samples of the Whispers Collection.  Without further ado (’cause I’m fresh out of ado):

Whispers set

Here are Zoya’s official color descriptions:

  • Cala – ZP823: A soft nude with a kiss of warmth that will flatter most skin tones.
  • April – ZP824: A light, rosy toned neutral that is a modern take on blush.
  • Eastyn – ZP825: A subtle grayed grape that is more interesting than mauve and gives a modern alternative that is ever so wearable.
  • Misty – ZP827: An easy to wear taupe that is an updated version of gray with just a touch of green to make it daring.
  • Ireland – ZP826: A uniquely wearable green that is muted enough to make it subtle yet still interesting. This green is well balanced between blue & yellow so it’s flattering on all skin tones.
  • Lake – ZP828: A softened blue that gives the effect of serene water with just a hint of vibrancy to preserve its luminosity.

All pictures show two coats of polish with no top coat and are photographed under indirect outdoor light.

Whispers Cala

Cala is indeed nude.

Whispers April

April is rosier than Cala, but still what I’d call a neutral.

Whispers Eastyn

Eastyn, hmmm.  Looked more lavender in the bottle but appears more gray on my nails.

Whispers Misty

Misty.  Well, Zoya’s description of taupe with a grayish and greenish tint is spot on.  What to say, what to say.  We had walls painted this color when we moved into our current house.

They were the first to go.

Whispers Ireland

I’m glad they gave the name Ireland to this green.  It’s a pretty pale sage that would probably look better on warmer-toned skin but I still like it.

Whispers Lake

And Lake for the blue.  Ooh, now we’re talkin’!  I love this one, and pale blues often look chalky on me but I don’t think Lake does.  It’s rather a grayish-blue and I think it looks great.  Lake is definitely my favorite of the set.

I found the formula to be a bit thin and streaky for all six polishes.  Dry time was fast but not unusually so.

This is an appropriate set for late winter and early spring, a calm bridge between the jewel tones of winter and the brighter pastels of spring.  Will it be to everyone’s taste?  No, but then nothing is.  Frankly, this has been a hard collection to review because I feel few of the colors look good on my skin tone, and I don’t work in an office or situation where such muted neutrals would be just the ticket.  You may have lighter/darker/different skin, though, and love them.  I hope so!

I’m also prejudiced because I think the polish world in general has waaaaay overdone neutrals in the past year or two, and they are not my cup of acetone.  How similar is Whispers to last year’s Naturel Satins?  The finish is different, glossy vs. satin, and while the two collections are by no means duplicates, some of the shades are similar.  I will be posting comparisons later in the week.

Spring 2016 news — House of Colour collection from China Glaze

My new Zoya Whispers Collection isn’t here yet, so let’s peek at some other late winter/early spring news.  China Glaze’s big spring set is called House of Colour.

CG House of Colour

I see a motley crew of cremes, shimmers, and glitters in a variety of colors — royal blue, pale yellow, fuchsia, tan, coral and more.  They should be in stores soon and are already available online, such as at Ulta.

For a really good look at all of them, check out THIS video review from Karina Kaboom.  The color names are (not in the same order as the bottles shown):

Come Rain or Shine
In the Near Fuchsia
Girls Just Want to Have Sun
Glitter Me This
Let’s Chalk About It
Sorry I’m Latte
Chrome Is Where the Heart Is
Shut the Front Door
Pink or Swim
About Layin’ Out
Moonlight the Night
Don’t Be Shallow

If you’re tired of the holidays, winter, snow, and so on, some spring news is always welcome.

What a beautiful winter-into-spring collection.  The muted rose and the blue are sure putting me in mind of Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2016.  Lovin’ the lavender Eastyn too!

I’m dreaming of a black Christmas

Posted on

A White Christmas?  Dead cert.  We’ve gotten tons of snow in the past week.  Mr. Silver Nail has shoveled so much snow that most days he doesn’t need to go to the gym for extra exercise.

So let me show you my little lump of coal.  Now, I’m not one of those bloggers who talks about her pets much, although I love them dearly and am very involved with all of them every day (except the one who was feral and whose idea of a good day is “Eat, hide, repeat.”)

Here’s the latest member of the family:

Sigyn, 8 weeks old, with favorite toy

She wasn’t a Christmas gift and has actually been with us a few months.  Her eyes have changed from green to gold and she looks like a tiny black panther now.  With humongous feet.  She’s polydactylous on every foot and her front feet look like oven mitts.

Naming her was fun.  My son started a theme of naming his cats after Scandinavian deities and has two named Skadi and Dagr, and I wanted to pick a name from that pantheon too.  Finally decided on Sigyn (SEE-gin).  We all know that Loki is a very popular pet name, Loki being the god of mischief, but how come his wife gets no love in the naming department?  Sigyn.  Often we call her Siggy.  She’s super-mischievous but also a joy too.

What does this have to do with Christmas?  Nothin’.  But I hope that you are all surrounded with the ones you love, human and animal alike.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Sephora Pantone eye shadow palette, I scoff at thee

Posted on

I’ve talked about it before, maybe too much.  The new Sephora eye shadow palette is out, the annual one that focuses on the Pantone Color(s) of the Year, and I was so NOT impressed.

Sephora pantone 2016

Those palette colors are all over the place and only a few would flatter me.  I mean, chartreuse???  So you know what I’m gonna do?  MAKE MY OWN.

I’ll start with the Colors of the Year for 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Pantone colors of the year 2016

Then I’m going to buy individual eye shadows at Coastal Scents in the colors I want.  The pink and the blue, sure, but then add several neutrals in various shades of brown and gray, more pinks, an off-white highlight.  Perhaps a violet or two.

I’ve bought from Coastal Scents before and been very pleased with everything — quality, prices, shipping.  Individual eye shadows, called “Hot Pots,” are usually only $1.95, and several times a year, as in NOW, are only 98 cents each.  They are magnetized and fit into empty palettes that are also reasonably priced.  You can pop the pans in and out as you wish but they stay put until you do.

Here’s one eye shadow calling my name, Baby Pink.

CS Baby Pink

There are dozens more pinks, some closer to Rose Quartz, some cooler or warmer.  Pick the ones that work for you.  Pick the finish you prefer — matte, shimmer, etc.

There’s a blue that’s close to Serenity, called Cornflower Blue, which unfortunately is out of stock, so it must be popular.

So remember, if you see a palette that you want but can’t afford or one where you only like a few of the colors, you can build your own.  You are the boss of you!

The Christmas Tag

Posted on

Other bloggers are doing this and I thought it would be fun, too.  Feel free to chime in with a comment about anything Christmas that you’d like to add!

Off my meds

Favorite Christmas movie?

If I could only pick one, it would the 1985 made-for-TV version of A Christmas Carol.  Although George C. Scott didn’t even attempt a British accent, his Scrooge alternately makes me angry, sad, and filled with pity, and brings me to tears when he pleads with The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.  This is one version where Tiny Tim actually looks like he’s dying.

Have you ever had a white Christmas?

Many!  Growing up in eastern North Carolina I never had one but I’ve lived almost all my adult life in western Montana and we have one every year.  We just got another 8 inches of the fluffy stuff last night!

Favorite Christmas song?

One of my relatively new faves is Bells Are Ringing by Mary-Chapin Carpenter.  It makes me understand that even if I didn’t have presents and a tree and all that “stuff,” I would still have Christmas in my heart.  Corny but true.  Here’s a YouTube link:  http://youtu.be/wDYnujUdoFw

Do you stay in your PJs or dress up for Christmas?

I stay in my robe until late in the morning and then wear my usual casual clothes around the house.

If you could buy one person a present this year, what would it be?

I’d wish I was ginormously rich and could buy my kids each a house.  Hey, go big or go home.

Do you open presents Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day?

We always open one on Christmas Eve and save the rest for the next morning.

Have you ever built a gingerbread house?

Yes!  When I was in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, my Little Sister and I made one a couple of years in a row for a show at the mall.  Very fun!  I remember one had a University of Montana theme and was called “Merry Grizmas.”

Any Christmas wishes?

Good health for all the family members.  Some recent events have made me realize that that is truly the best gift of all.

Favorite Christmas scent?

EVERYTHING.  ALL OF IT.  Snow, evergreen trees, peppermint, baking cookies, hot chocolate.

Favorite Christmas gift or memory?

When I was about seven years old I wanted a Cheerful Tearful doll more than anything.  I can still remember walking into the living room that Christmas morning and seeing her sitting on a chair with her arms reaching out to me.  My parents didn’t even wrap her so I could see her right away.  Also, my mother, world’s best seamstress, made an entire wardrobe of clothes for her too — pajamas, everyday clothes, a fancy outfit.  I still have the doll and all the clothes.

What tops your tree?

An angel. She’s even older than I am so we treat her with extra TLC.
