Go Through the Looking Glass with Alice and OPI

Posted on

New collection of brights for 2016 from OPI!  Called Alice Through the Looking Glass, it’s a tie-in with the new Tim Burton movie from Disney which is a sequel, I suppose, to Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.  Trailer looks…. creepy.

Direct link:

I prefer my old book with the original Tenniel illustrations, thanks.

But… polish!  Everything2K has a quick writeup and shows this picture

Alice TTLG from OPI nail plate

Those three white ones on the left are blank, and there are nine polishes:

The I’s Have It
Oh My Majesty!
What’s the Hatter with You?
I’m Gown for Anything!
Fearlessly Alice
A Mirror Escape
Having a Big Head Day
Mad for Madness Sake
What Time Isn’t It?

I think the shimmery gold A Mirror Escape look pretty but the others underwhelm me.  We live in an ocean of red cremes already.

Release is tentatively scheduled for May 1st to precede the movie’s summer premiere.

Spring 2016 news — House of Colour collection from China Glaze

Posted on

My new Zoya Whispers Collection isn’t here yet, so let’s peek at some other late winter/early spring news.  China Glaze’s big spring set is called House of Colour.

CG House of Colour

I see a motley crew of cremes, shimmers, and glitters in a variety of colors — royal blue, pale yellow, fuchsia, tan, coral and more.  They should be in stores soon and are already available online, such as at Ulta.

For a really good look at all of them, check out THIS video review from Karina Kaboom.  The color names are (not in the same order as the bottles shown):

Come Rain or Shine
In the Near Fuchsia
Girls Just Want to Have Sun
Glitter Me This
Let’s Chalk About It
Sorry I’m Latte
Chrome Is Where the Heart Is
Shut the Front Door
Pink or Swim
About Layin’ Out
Moonlight the Night
Don’t Be Shallow

If you’re tired of the holidays, winter, snow, and so on, some spring news is always welcome.

Zoya Whispers

Experience color serenity with this muted and tranquil palette of transitional nail neutrals.

  • Cala – ZP823: A soft nude with a kiss of warmth that will flatter most skin tones.
  • April – ZP824: A light, rosy toned neutral that is a modern take on blush.
  • Eastyn – ZP825: A subtle grayed grape that is more interesting than mauve and gives a modern alternative that is ever so wearable.
  • Misty – ZP827: An easy to wear taupe that is an updated version of gray with just a touch of green to make it daring.
  • Ireland – ZP826: A uniquely wearable green that is muted enough to make it subtle yet still interesting. This green is well balanced between blue & yellow so it’s flattering on all skin tones.
  • Lake – ZP828: A softened blue that gives the effect of serene water with just a hint of vibrancy to preserve its luminosity.

What a beautiful winter-into-spring collection.  The muted rose and the blue are sure putting me in mind of Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2016.  Lovin’ the lavender Eastyn too!

The OTHER “most wonderful time of the year”

Posted on

Ah, the holidays.  Spend, spend, spend.  Stress, stress, stress.

Part of the reason I’ve been scarce lately is that I have had basically a full-time job the last couple of weeks in finishing a hand-made Christmas gift.  As of last night, it’s done, though, so now all I have to do it go to the war zone post office and mail it.

If you’re like me, you’ve been absolutely bombarded with ads for the past month.  Major overload.  After a while I almost ignored them all.  But ** if ** you are still wanting to do some holiday shopping — perhaps for yourself? — then now is getting to be a real good time.  Years ago, Christmas things were not clearanced out until the day after Christmas, and standing in line in the cold before stores opened was for December 26th, not Black Friday.  Nowadays, however, it seems like stores slash the prices a week or more before Christmas.

To wit — Ulta is having a 50% off sale today, both in store and online, on some great items.  Just to mention nail polish:

I’ve got my eye on the Mini Mixers set from China Glaze.

The down side this close to Christmas, of course, is that selections are often picked over if not downright out of stock.  That’s a risk you take.  But you can also score some great deals.

So today, after buying some fishing lures for Mr. Silver Nail’s stocking, I think I’ll look for a little something for myself.  To celebrate the finish of that gift I made!

Coming from Sephora — all that Pantone jazz

Posted on

I was looking forward to seeing what Sephora was going to have as tie-ins to the Pantone Color(s) of the Year for 2016.  Last year I missed out on the Marsala (wine red) eye shadow palette they had and would’ve liked to have gotten it, but oh well, wasn’t going to pay hundreds for it on eBay.

As mentioned earlier this month, the Colors of the Year are Rose Quartz and Serenity, beautiful pastels.  I kind of wonder if they’re going to be that great for all skin tones, though, especially for darker-skinned people.

At any rate, here are some of the upcoming items from Sephora:

To see the whole line, click HERE.

There’s a matte light blue lipstick (WHY?  Who wants to wear light blue lipstick and look like Halloween?  This must be some trend that, at 57, I’m not getting.  I understand that it can be “fun,” but…. blue lips???), a pink “layer” lipstick, an eye shadow palette, and a set of lip glosses that includes a blue and a yellow, because who doesn’t want blue or yellow lips.  #zombielips   #jaundice   #frostbite

The eye shadow palette, eh, don’t think so.  My first impression is that there are not nearly enough pinks and most of the colors would not flatter me at all.  It seems all over the color map.  I see Marsala from last year, Radiant Orchid from the year before, a weird lime green, a flat-out red, and other shades that make me say, “Probably not.”  For $39, I think I can find something more flattering.

Misa, you make it difficult

Dear Misa Cosmetics,

I know you’re not that famous of a polish company.  You know all those people who say, “It’s not you, it’s me”?  They’re lying.  The problem in this relationship is YOU.

I’ve tried to love you.  But you’re so elusive.  I have never, ever seen you for sale in person.  In the past, I’ve bought you from Head2ToeBeauty, but even they gave up on you — the last collection of yours they stocked was Surreal Escape from Winter 2011.  Yeah, FOUR years ago.

Oh, I check your web site occasionally but wonder why I bother.  As of today, December 14th, the banner on your web site advertises the summer collection.  Summer.  Is it that you feel winter shouldn’t be announced until the winter solstice, spring at the spring equinox, and so on?  Even if that’s the reasoning, where the hell did fall go?  Nope, somebody dropped the ball.

I sent you a message last week on your Facebook page, and you replied that the winter collection would be up by the end of the week.

It wasn’t.

Sure, today you posted one teaser picture…

Misa winter 2015 banner

… but that’s it.  Gee, could you have possibly made the bottles any smaller??

The first — the very first — polish I showed on this blog was your Runway Diva, a safe pink-mauve.  But I loved it and still love it.  Fantastic formula.

I’m telling you all this for your own good.  The fashion and social media worlds are gonna pass you by if you don’t get with it a little more.  People now are already thinking past winter and into post-holiday sales and spring colors.  They — and I — are dreaming about the Pantone colors of the year for 2016.

Hope to see you in a much more timely manner next year.

(wanna) Love (you but you make it hard),

The Silver Nail
