About

Hi, my name is Susan and I’m 57 years old or young, depending on how I feel, and was never what you’d call a nail polish girl.  In fact, my nails were in terrible shape the whole time I was growing up.  But in the last few years I’ve gotten interested in polish just for fun.  I do my own nails and I have absolutely no future as a hand model… or as any other kind of model.  My hands have sun damage, nicks and scars, the all-too-frequent broken nail — you get the idea.  But I think we can all be beautiful and take some time for ourselves.

In early 2014, after blogging for two years, I decided to branch out from talking only about nails and nail polish into makeup.  We’ll see how it goes!  Face it, we’re all just big kids with a new box of crayons, although we call those crayons “makeup” now.

I’m not an esthetician, cosmetologist, dermatologist, any other kind of -ologist, nor a chemist in either the American or the British sense.  I just try stuff.  Some things work, some don’t.  Some colors look good, some look dreadful.  Your mileage may vary —  keep your own preferences in mind.  I’ll always give my true opinion of products and no person or company is paying me to say anything.  Most of all, let’s have fun!

  1. Hi, I know you as MTSilver from the Cafe Gray site. Love this blog. I’ve noticed darker blue polish lately and wondering if you have tested any dark blues.

Thanks, Chris Williams (you know me as browneyedgirl)

Hi Chris, thanks so much for stopping by and for commenting!

I haven’t tried any dark blues yet but I did swatch a medium blue, Electric Beat from China Glaze, on February 5th. I think it doesn’t look quite as bright in real life as it does in the photos.

I have a medium dusty blue that I want to swatch very soon, and will try a dark blue as well. I really appreciate the suggestions!

  3. Love the name of your blog. I’m 52 and love nail polish too. I know you said you love silver nail polish and that you ordered one of the limited editions from Zoya, the one with Zeenat. I tried it last night and all I can say is GORGEOUS! I used the Sparkle Gloss top coat and then iced two tips on each hand with some glitter. Just wondering if you are going to swatch Zeenat because it will blow you away.

    • Hello Kathi, and thanks for reading! Yes, I’m going to swatch the Bibhu M. collection as soon as I get it, which will hopefully be today. Packages seem to take for-ev-er between Zoya and me. I just received my Peter Som collection yesterday and will be posting swatches of those colors today.

      Really looking forward to Zeenat!

I’m so glad I found your blog. I needed a new hobby and have always loved nail polish and am lucky to have darn good nails. I have recieved such good tips from the blogging community on colors, nail care & especially cleanup after polishing. However these dear girls are young enough to be my grandchildren!!!!! I started to question myself what’s an old gal like me thinking?

I may be one of you oldest new followers since in Sept. I will be 65 (Yikes!!!) One of the best parts of getting older is now I am soo comfortable in my own skin, if I want to wear blue, green or glitter I’m going for it. I have also ventured into nail art & am loving it too.

So thanks for the great blog, I will be a faithful follower.

    • Priscilla, I’m so happy you found us! Getting older definitely has its perks — I no longer worry much about what other people think. Like you say, if I want to wear green or purple or glitter, I do! We have so many more choices for our nails than we did 30 years ago, and it’s a lot of fun.

Hope you have time to read back through The Silver Nail’s archives. You’ll see some great colors and some that weren’t my cup of tea. 🙂 Welcome!

    Hi,
Just wanted to say, don’t give up on the ‘accent nail’ – older ladies can totally rock this, even for every day. It’s easy to tone down the contrast by using the same/similar shade in a different finish (e.g. glitter or shimmer vs creme), a deeper tone of the same shade, or a glitter topcoat over the base polish. Stick with it, and you’ll find the level of contrast you enjoy the most. Loving the blog, and it’s great to see polishes on older nails – I’m a long way past 30 too.

    • Thanks, PP! I love the accent nail look and really like your tips. So far my favorite has been wearing a light-medium teal creme polish with my ring finger done in a foil finish of the same shade. Yes, we older ladies can rock the nails too, can’t we? 😀

Absolutely, and your teal combination sounds lovely! I’ve always had a few ridges on my nails, but they have become worse with age and ill health. The biggest cuplrits are my ring fingers, so I nearly always add a little glitter or a decal on these if I’m wearing a polish that dosen’t hide them so well (maybe that’s why other people choose the ring fingers too for this..). I really think your nails is the easiest way to step out of your comfort zone a little with something bolder or glitzier than usual. Outside of the workplace, other people seem less judgemental about wilder nails than they tend to be about dramatic hair or makeup on someone who is a little older as well. All my best wishes, PP :o)

  6. TSN, you are my new blog crush. Is that creepy? lol For one your nail polish story is eerily similar to my own as I would not have been caught dead with painted nails years ago. Recently I’ve found myself amidst a full on addiction, although you still won’t catch me in pink polish. Anyhow, I’ve not had time to spend hours perusing your blog yet, I assure you that I will get to it though, but I love what I see thus far and I look forward to following. By the way, have you heard of or checked out Nfu-Oh, Nubar, KOH or ANNY nail polish? If not definitely give them a look.

    • Hi Lindz! ** blush ** So happy you like my blog. It’s always a work in progress. I’ve heard of Nfu-Oh and Nubar but haven’t tried them yet. I love being able to try new brands. My latest polish crush is a-England. Om nom nom….

      • I have been wanting to get my hands on a-England polish myself and have been contemplating placing an order. They do look amazing. I haven’t given Nfu-Oh a try just yet but I do have a bottle of Nubar Reclaim which is an amazing green holo.

  7. I just discovered your blog, too, and I love it! I am 46 and got into doing my nails in 2010. Can’t wait to read about your adventures! 🙂

  8. I got you all beat I think. I just turned 60 (but thankfully don’t look anywhere near it, so they say). I have tons of polish and wear glitter and accent nails. My daughter steals my polish when she comes to visit and our favorite thing is to send each other blog posts on polish. We don’t have anything to prove, so we should wear what we like! I’m going to be a new subscriber – so thanks and keep up the good work!

  10. Well, this is a fun blog I just happened to stumble on. What’s nice is that I don’t feel like I’m trying to act young just because I’m experimenting with different shades and types of nail polish, since reading some of the posts from other older people. I’m 60, and have always had terrible nails until recently they are in good enough shape to throw some polish on them. I love the shimmery shades, but have stayed with pinks, lavender, reds, or alot of muted colors. I’ve tried some glitter ones too, and love them. Dare I wear a blue or green color, and not feel like I’m wearing a color reserved more for my teenage grandaughter? I just might now. Afterall, I’m a grandmother with tattoos, and find myself at my age not caring so much what others think. Well, I’ll check in from time to time, and thanks for the blog.

    • So glad you stumbled here! It IS fun that we can play with polish to suit ourselves, not anybody else. You said “dare I wear a blue or green…?” and I hope you do. Teal flatters so many skin tones and is pretty darn stylish. Zoya has a shimmer called Zuza that you might like. Thanks for commenting!

  13. Oh! To find a blog about nail polish that isn’t run by someone who could be my daughter. Thank you. I got hooked on polish when the major player was Cutex. Yeah, I loved the 70’s.

  16. I was happy to find your blog the other day. I enjoy your posts because they are fun to read, but I enjoy them more because it is a pleasure to read something written by someone who can punctuate and construct a sentence properly. We are around the same age, so I also appreciate your point of view on things. Thanks for your fine blog.
