The Mystery Trio from Zoya

Posted on

Disclosure:  The Essie top coat used was previously supplied by Sleek Nail for review.

By now, it’s no secret what the three mystery mini polishes were that Zoya advertised in their promo a month ago because bloggers and others have been showing them for at least a week.  I only received my order today.

This promotion promised three “brand new” mystery shades in a mini size plus any three Zoya polishes (regularly $9-$10 each) all for $15 shipping.

Oh, the drama.  As soon as the mystery colors appeared, people cried foul.  Turns out they were not “brand new” but had been featured at a fashion show a year ago.  Still, they’d never been offered for sale.  Zoya said the wording of the ad was wrong and changed it.  People still complained.  Furthermore, despite very clear wording in the ad that it could take up to 5 weeks to receive the orders, people were screaming, “Where’s my order?!?” after just a week or two.

This latter issue goes under the heading of “Obtuseness on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.”

Hey, I was happy to get three full-sized polishes on my wish list (Edyta, Crystal, and Ariel, gorgeous!) plus three mystery minis, all for the total price of $15.  I think it’s a good deal no matter how you look at it, but if a complainer whines in the forest and no one hears her, does she exist?

Let’s get down to swatches.  The three colors are:

  • Charlotte (my bottle says Charlott) — a yellow-putty creme
  • Anais — an almost-black with subtle shimmer
  • Severine — a silvery gold metallic

Mystery trio

They were streaky on the first coat:

You can see how Anais has a dark brown cast to it.

Good by the third coat:

Are these colors I would have picked?  No.  I think they’re kind of boring, but you know me, I would have picked a pink, a blue, and a purple — I’m predictable that way!  I probably would have been more enthusiastic about the polishes six months ago, going into fall and not into spring like now.

I already have several blacks and golds, yet still like Anais and Severine.  Charlott, eh, not my color.

But let’s dress up Charlott and Anais a bit.  Here they are with one coat of Essie’s Summit of Style:

Better, much better!  Even Charlott is more wearable for me this way.

I don’t believe these polishes are available for sale from Zoya, but considering all the people complaining about them online, you may find them for trade or for sale elsewhere.  If you did receive them, what do you think, good colors or not?  Have you dressed them up with some other top coat or used them in nail art?

  1. I was both happy and disappointed in the mystery trio. Disappointed they were blah colors, but happy that I didn’t already have them and they are core colors for any collection, and I love Zoya. I will probably use them for stocking stuffers or gift baskets. How can a girl complain though when I got 6 full sized polishes that I had on my wish list and free shipping along with my 3 mini’s?!!

  2. I also got the mini trio! Along with six full-size polishes. I’ve got an initial review of them on my blog, but no swatches yet. I was happy about Anais and Severine, but Charlotte was disappointing. I don’t have any black or pale gold polishes, so they’re good additions for me.

  3. I was kind of disappointed in the mini trio, because they’re not shades I’d normally go for – Anais and Severine are wearable, but Charlotte has a bit too much yellow for my skin tone. Still, they were free, and I got the 6 full sizes I’d been eyeing plus free shipping, so 9 polishes for $27? Heck yeah.

  4. I didn’t realize all the drama with these. I chose to stock up on another bottle of Remove+, so for $25 for that, I got the 3 polishes I picked and the mini trio all shipped free. I have gotten a ton of free and sale polish from Zoya, cannot complain about that! 🙂

  5. I was just glad the minis weren’t dupes of what I already have. I figured I wouldn’t wear Charlotte at all until I saw what you did. Great idea. I really like Anais. The shimmer is what does it for me. Severin looks pretty much like other golds in my stash, but I’m happy to have it anyway. I got three of the mattes for my three choices, Posh, Savita and Verushka. Posh delayed my order but I figured it would get to me eventually so I wasn’t worried. People need to realize that when something is offered for free shipping, they’ll use the cheapest shipping method available.

  6. I was just happy to get free polish in the mystery trio! I had no idea there was drama until Zoya’s page posted that everyone who ordered got a promo code for a free satin color due to the misunderstanding. So, I ordered Tove as my free satin, with Ki and Remy to get me to $18. Hey, I’ll take it!!

I was happy to get another black. The gold doesn’t do much for me, but I don’t have anything like it (I stay away from gold typically) but I’ll probably use it at some point. Charlotte looks like something I would NEVER wear, until I saw your post! This morning I was at the pharmacy and got Sally Xtreme’s “Frazzle Dazzle” which looks similar to the Essie top coat you used, which I think looks fantastic on Charlotte. I may get some use out if it with that top coat! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  7. I’m really excited for these shades to arrive with my order. They are very ‘understated glam’ to me – chic and scream fashion show so I’m excited to have them. As you showed in this post, they look even better with a glitter topcoat and I’ve got loads of those to go around, so I’ll probably play with a few looks.

  8. Charlotte is both unwearable on me (way too yellow on my porcelain skin) and had an open top that was just starting to leak when the package got to me. I personally found the trio to be incredibly disappointing (I too would have loved to see something more spring appropriate), but as you said, $15 for three polishes with free shipping is still a great deal. I’m not sad I got the deal, but I’m definitely underwhelmed!

  9. I got my order Sat, and was pleased with all the colors. I really have to try the mystery colors myself to decide if I like them. One positive is they are colors that are not similar to any I have. All this complaining on Zoya Facebook has been so unreasonable. It was a good promo, and I’m sure they’ll be more. So many lovely colors. Suzy

    • The complaining on Zoya’s FB page continues to amaze me. One recent rant says, in effect, “I know you said the orders could take up to 5 weeks but I’m really really mad it could take up to 5 weeks so I hate you and am never ordering from you again.” WHAT?!?!!

  10. I’m always amazed/flabbergasted/shocked by the amount and type of complaints. That fact that you got 3 full-size Zoya polishes for $15, free shipping and 3 free minis is just not enough to make some people happy. I try to hold myself back but i admit to replying to some of the ridiculousness. Sigh, the colors in the minis are shades that I would never pick. But, I’m kinda digging Anais as I’m not fan of pure black. I will never wear Severine. As for Charlottie, it’s a bit yellow for my skintone but I like what you did with the glitter.

  11. I actually liked the trio well enough. I will never wear Severine on its own, but it looks like it might be good for stamping, since it reminds me of China Glaze Passion. Anais has a slight olive undertone to me, which makes it unique among my black polishes. And I actually like Charlott (that’s what my bottle says too), it’s more yellow than I would normally pick but for some reason I’m drawn to it.

Add me to the list of people who can’t believe all the complaining on the Zoya Facebook page!! It kills me. I wish I had their patience and grace when dealing with difficult people! I never make New Years resolutions, but this year I decided I have to STOP reading the comments on pages like that, because they just make me mad.
